The ERC was set up to tackle and provide enlightenment on festering environmental challenges fostered by unsustainable practices of industrialization and mass consumerism. Hence, bridging the knowledge and competency gap required for governments, individuals, commercial and non-commercial entities to attain and maintain a healthy and sustainable environment which they can thrive on.

Our Objectives Include:

• Establishing a research institution that is internationally recognized for the provision of innovative training and learning in all areas relating to the environment
• Contribute to improved understanding of environmental issues and policy through advocacy to enhance decision making and law enforcement for sustainable development
• Provide consultancy services in the area of environmental and sustainable development issues
• Proffer solutions to environmental and human problems based on holistic approach and interdisciplinary studies
• Collaborate with national and international institutions for academic and research programmes
• Stimulate interest in, and promote the study of the environment in Nigeria, West Africa, Africa and beyond
• Promote interactions among researchers, scientists and other stakeholders in exploring the diverse fields which relate to the environment.

The ERC achieves these objectives by utilising a double-pronged institutional approach comprising essentially of two entities:

An entity limited by guarantee, which is basically involved in academics, research and advocacy. Its aim is to influence Nigeria’s environmental practices; it operates based on donor funding and other forms of endowment.

and

A commercial arm that operates a more aggressive and self-sustaining business model, which is focussed on consultancies, training, certification and allied matters. Its aim is to complement the activities of the not-for-profit entity without impinging on the terms and conditions outlined by donors and other supporting bodies.
